On June 23, 2012, our beloved first-born son, Shane Truman Todd, was murdered in Singapore. Shane transferred from this earth to heaven as an American hero, and it brings us tremendous comfort and joy to know that he is now with Jesus, and one day we will be reunited with him for eternity.
On September 5, we celebrated what would have been Shane’s 36th birthday. We honor Shane by following the example of Horatio Spafford who penned the well-know hymn, “It Is Well With My Soul.” Horatio wrote this beautiful hymn after he experienced the loss of his young son to scarlet fever, the destruction of most of his wealth in the Great Chicago Fire, and the tragic death of his four daughters with the sinking of an ocean liner in the North Atlantic. Horatio’s tragedy has taught me “not be a fair weather friend to God.” I honor Shane by not allowing sorrow, despair and the evil of this world to defeat me. Rather, I live to praise His Holy Name, to spread His love by the power of His Word to a hurting world.
Shane is in heaven enjoying God for eternity. We are on earth and each one of us has a choice between good and evil, life and death, blessings and curses (Duet. 30). Shane would want you to know that God can and will forgive your sins, even the sin of murder.
If you are walking in the ways of darkness, I pray that you will cry out to Jesus and ask for forgiveness, turn from your evil ways and invite Him to be the Lord of your life. It is not too late. “For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth comes knowledge and understanding. He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk in integrity, guarding the paths of justice, and He preserves the way of His godly ones. Then you will discern righteousness and justice and equity and every good course. For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul; Discretion will guard you, understanding will watch over you, to deliver you from the way of evil, from the man who speaks perverse things; From those who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness; (NAS, Proverbs 2:6-13)
